Councils seek second homes tax surcharge

Communities Secretary John Denham is said to be considering the proposal, which would mean steep increases in council tax on properties kept as second homes or holiday lets. Sounds like a good idea for St Mabyn!

First signs of spring in North Cornwall

snowdrops-Dinham's-Bridge-camel-csa 24-01-10
What a relief to see snowdrops emerging in the woods between St Mabyn and St Kew Highway.
The ground is far too cold and saturated with melted ice and snow for us to start work again on Camel Community Supported Agriculture’s vegetable plot.
Once the earth warms up in late February / early March our volunteer growing team can begin preparing the ground, spreading compost and planting seed into cells to go in the polytunnel.
In the meantime we’re continuing to harvest our own parsnips, Jerusalem artichokes and carrots as well as the remaining onions and shallots in store.  The rest of the weekly veg box contents are being sourced locally from growers in the immediate area.

Garden Club

In December members of the St Mabyn Garden enjoyed their Christmas
Party at the Village Hall. Entertainment was provided by Crispin
Payne with seaonable songs. Thanks to John Lobb for keeping the old
brain cells working with his tricky quiz. Special thanks to Hilda
who cooked the delicious Christmas cake and Venning for proding the
wine.
Unfortunately we had to cancel our January meeting with Peter Davies
from Bodmin due to the inclement weather of snow and ice.
For our next meeting Wednesday 10 February at St Mabyn Village Hall at
7.30pm, we will be welcoming Lorraine Turnbull who will be talking
about growing vegetables. Should be very interesting and looking
forward to it.
For any enquiries about meetings and membership (£5 per annum) please
contact Angela Bunney (secretary) 01208 841511.

THE FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCH

Very many thanks to Richard Jenkin of St Mabyn, who spoke to an extremely attentive audience at our meal in St Mabyn Village Hall on 27th November. His inspirational account of the time he spent teaching deprived youngsters in the township of Port Elizabeth was very well received and much appreciated.
Our next meal with wine, followed by a speaker, will take place in St Mabyn Village Hall on Friday 22nd January, 12 noon for 12.30, when Lady Mary Holborow has very kindly agreed to speak on the history of the Lord Lieutenancy, a title that dates back to the Tudors. Lady Holborow has held office as Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall since 1994, a title that is given to a Monarch's personal representative in a particular area. Reservations for this meal and talk are already being made and, as numbers are limited, we recommend early booking. Admission is £12 (£10 for Members) payable at the door. To reserve a place please 'phone or email Chairman Liz Williams on 01208 841378 or Audrey Cooke on 01208 841607 If you would like to become a Member of Friends’ and benefit from concessions, you can either join on the day or contact Carol Grigg on 01208 841276. Membership remains at only £10 per annum.
The speaker at our meal on Friday 5th March will be Giles Clotworthy, who will talk about his many years working for the National Trust. We are also currently taking bookings for this event.

A milk tanker became stuck on slippery snow this morning. Farmer Terry Martin came to the rescue with a BIG shovel of sand!
