ST MABYN GARDEN CLUB

It was a cold and frosty evening when members of St Mabyn Garden Club met at the village hall to hear Bill Herring, Head at Duchy Collage Camborne, speak on vegetable growing. With accompanying slides he gave us a very interesting and informative talk on the various types of vegetables grown, also warning us about the many garden pests that can bring disease to our vegetable patch.  The annual rotation of crops  where you avoid planting the same crop in the same bit of ground more than one year in four, is the natural way of preventing root disease. The traditional way to rotate crops is to divide the plot into four, eg, grow potatoes in one quarter, root veg in another, peas and beans in one and brassicas in the fourth quarter.  Salad and other quick growing crops can be planted in the gaps between the rows of slower larger crops. This does not take into account for the demand  of modern crops such as sweetcorn and courgettes.  A question and answer session then followed.  After a vote of thanks to our speaker Bill Herring, tea and biscuits were served.

Our Spring outing is a trip to Godolphin House,  near Helston 10th May 2012.  if you are interested please contact Angela Bunney 01208 841511.
