Mistletoe Fair 2006

A very big thank you to everyone who helped make the Mistletoe Fair on 9th December such a happy day.
A special thank you to all those who worked so hard before the event, including the Mistletoe Fair Committee, members of the Village Hall Committee, the Snooker Club for allowing us to use their room, those who drove to Somerset to collect the mistletoe, and to Elaine who picked it for us. We must also mention our appreciation for all the very popular and much appreciated cakes, preserves and mince pies very generously donated. So many people worked hard to make it possible – very many thanks to you all.
As a result of the Fair, the Village Hall will benefit by £642.76, so thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed the afternoon and helped make it worthwhile.
Many people have said that it should happen again – no promises, but keep the second Saturday in December free!!

Young Farmers

On Friday, January 26th, there will be a visit to Bodmin Police Station with a talk by Sergeant Mark Legget, meet at St Mabyn at 7.20pm.
On Saturday, January 27th, they visit Trethorne for a pub quiz, 10-pin bowling, 'call my bluff', pool and freestyle disco dance competitions, from 7.30pm. A bus will be leaving from St Mabyn for all members, time to be confirmed.

Salsa and Yoga

More than 20 enthusiasts turned up for the new term of St Mabyn salsa dancing. It costs £3 per session.
An evening yoga class taster session is on offer, Thursday, January 25. The first taster session was a great success with 25 turning up and we all had room to enjoy an introduction to yoga. Suitable clothing is advised.

HIGH WINDS!!

High winds have caused damage to the disused Longstone Filling Station by the B3266 near St.Mabyn this morning. The forecourt canopy is starting to come down with the wind and pieces are flying around in a dangerous manner!
A tree came down on the road out of St.Mabyn to the A39 earlier this morning.

Village Hall

An Oak floor for the Village Hall!
A grant has been received from the Awards for All, from the small grants fund (under £10k); the Lottery is granting £4,500 and NCDC £1500. Bodmin Flooring Centre will be laying the super new wooden floor during February half-term and to celebrate this wonderful event a Barn Dance is being planned. At long last the pre-school playgroup children will be able to dance about in bare feet – no more splinters!

Scout Group

The 1st St Mabyn Scout Group went to the Eden Project on their last Wednesday before Christmas to enjoy a little seasonal ice-skating! “ Great excitement ensued as the group, including our leader, took to the ice - some gracefully, others not quite so! By the end of the session all members had gained enough confidence to skate unaided. It was great to see our older more capable members helping and looking out for the young Beavers. Our thanks to our leaders for organising a fun evening. The Group met on Wednesday 6th December at their hut for their Christmas Party.

A Quiz Night at St Mabyn Inn was organised during December in aid of St Mabyn Scout Group, our thanks go to John, the quiz master /organiser - a sum of £72 was raised. A big thanks to the Tug-of-war team who kindly donated a tent for our use.
Following the Christmas break our first meeting will be on Wednesday 10th for Beavers and Cubs and Thursday 11th for Scouts and every week thereafter.”

St Mabyn Young Farmers

Friday 15th December - An evening of Christmas carol singing, around various local villages, starting at St Mabyn, then St Tudy, followed by a stop in Helland and ending the evening at Longstone.
Wednesday 20th December - Our Club carol service at St Mabyn church attended by many members, family and friends. Margaret Millson led the service with various readings from members of the club: sung carols with musical accompaniments from James Mutton, Charlotte Woodrow, Kim Pauling, Emma and David Braunton. Mulled wine and mince pies, followed by our Christmas prize draw brought the evening to a close.
Monday 22nd December- County Carol Service at Truro Catherdral. About 1400 members (from the county),family and friends attended - hosted this year by Wadebridge Young Farmers whose members portrayed the Nativity.
Wednesday 27th December – They held their annual Christmas party at St Breward football club. This year the theme was cross dressing!! Lads in drag! Great! (and they enjoyed it!!) There was a brilliant turn out from the local young farmers clubs wonderful evening!
January 5th January 2007- A Body Shop Party was held in the village hall,which was enjoyed by all members, especially those lads who had the facial's!! Body Shop products were on sale throughout the evening.

In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described St Mabyn like this:
"MABYN (ST.), a village, a parish, and a sub-district, in Bodmin district, Cornwall. The village stands 2 miles WNW of the river Camel, 4 E by N of Wadebridge, and 8 NNW of Bodmin-Road r. station; and has a post office under Bodmin, and a fair on 14 Feb. The parish comprises 4,067 acres. Real property, £5,200. Pop., 714. Houses, 153. Colquite was the seat of the Marneys. Tredeathy is a chief residence. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Exeter. Value, £712.* Patron, Viscount Falmouth. The church is ancient but good; has a very lofty pinnacled tower; and contains some old monuments. There are a Wesleyan chapel, a national school, and charities £6. Peters, the author of a "Dissertation on Homer and Job, ''was rector.- The subdistrict contains also six other parishes. Acres, 28,569. Population 3,085. Houses, 636."

Problems with water pressure!

St.Mabyn's water supply comes from De lank on Bodmin Moor, there is however a pressure reducing valve in the village and it was this that failed on the morning of 31st December causing so many villagers leaks and consequent flooding. South West water say you can claim any expenses for damage from them.
